Amit Heri: E-RYT500 Yoga Teacher • Authorized Ashtanga Teacher • Composer • Sound Healer • Performer
Rooted in the birthplace of modern yoga—Karnataka, India—my journey into the world of yoga began unknowingly in my early teens, where yoga was simply part of the landscape of my life. But even as I flowed through early asanas, my heart was set to a different rhythm: music. That rhythm took me to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and for many years, the stage became my temple.
It wasn’t until my late twenties that yoga called me back with unmistakable clarity—this time at the esteemed Iyengar Institute in Pune. That experience reawakened a deep inner devotion and marked the beginning of a path that has since grown into over 25 years of immersion in traditional practice. I have studied Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga extensively under M S Vishwanath, nephew and senior disciple of Sri Pattabhi Jois, and deepened my Iyengar Yoga training with revered teachers including Birjoo Mehta and Dr. Rajalakshmi.
Today, as an E-RYT500 certified instructor with over 10,000 hours of teaching experience, I offer a holistic range of yoga practices including Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Iyengar-Inspired Hatha, Yin, and Restorative Yoga. My teachings emphasize yoga as a profound system for transcending suffering and awakening the joy, love, and clarity that already exist within us.
Alongside physical practice, I also facilitate sound healing journeys, kirtans, and chanting circles, weaving vibration and voice into transformative communal experiences. These are more than performances—they’re sacred offerings meant to restore harmony in body, breath, and mind.
While yoga now shapes the soul of my everyday life, music remains an inseparable part of my being. My work blends the melodic depth of Indian classical music with the improvisational fire of jazz. Over the years, I’ve performed at globally revered venues such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Barbican Centre, WOMAD, and more.
As a guitarist and composer, I’ve shared the stage and studio with musical legends including Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu, Charlie Mariano, Angelique Kidjo, Shankar Mahadevan, U. Srinivas, Ranjit Barot, and Salif Keita. My original works span albums (I ❤ India, Jhoola, Elephant Walk), film scores (Morning Raga), and collaborations across cultures and genres.
I was honored to be named among OPEN Magazine’s 50 Most Creative Indians—a distinction I carry with deep gratitude. Today, I continue to blend music, yoga, and healing into immersive experiences that inspire presence, connection, and transformation.
Now based between Los Angeles, India, and Koh Samui, I invite you to join me—on the mat, in sound, or in stillness—as we explore the rhythms of inner and outer life together.
Let’s connect. Let’s practice. Let’s play.
Yoga. Music. Presence.
